Gravel Lane windows project

Community-led exhibition space update

July 2026

The Gravel Lane Shop Fronts project will transform new shop front windows along Gravel Lane into a rotating public exhibition space that celebrates local creativity, identity, and lived experiences. The initiative aims to showcase local talent, honour the area’s rich heritage particularly its textile history and create a more vibrant and welcoming street environment in the heart of the Middlesex Street Estate.

Following an open call to local artists, collectives, community groups, schools, youth organisations, institutions and residents, 23 submissions were received across a wide range of formats, including illustration, painting, photography, textiles, film, archival material and community storytelling. The newly formed Gravel Lane Shop Fronts Steering Group held its first meeting on 28 April 2026 at the Artizan Library. The group brings together local residents, artists, and representatives from London Metropolitan University, the Fashion Retail Academy and Aldgate Connect. Members reviewed the submissions with a view to selecting and curating the first exhibition, focusing on works that reflect the area’s textile heritage, diverse communities and creative spirit.

Key decisions from the meeting:

  • Displays will rotate every four months, offering residents and visitors fresh artwork and stories throughout the year.

  • Aldgate Connect will take responsibility for the long-term curation and management of the displays, in partnership with the City of London.

  • A site visit is being arranged for steering group members and local organisations to view the shop fronts and explore future opportunities for community participation.

The first exhibition is expected to launch later this year, creating a new platform for local voices, creativity and culture right in the heart of the Middlesex Street Estate community.
